Bulletin 1756 ControlLogix and GuardLogix Controllers include a range of controllers to suit standard, process, motion, safety, redundant and extreme environment applications. With memory options ranging from 2 to 32 MB, these controllers provide fast processing in a single integrated solution for all types of applications.

The new ControlLogix L7x Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) provide advanced memory, speed and processing capabilities for a wide range of control demands, from high-performance logic and motion to information-intensive process applications. The new controllers also leverage the single design environment and networking protocol of the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture system.

ControlLogix L7x Controller Enhancements:

  • Optimised for control of high performance motion drives on EtherNet/IP™ or SERCOS™ interfaces, supporting as many as 100 axes.
  • Faster dual-core custom CPU improves controller scan times.
  • Increased CIP communications connections from 250 to 500.
  • Unconnected buffer defaults now increased from 10 to 20, (maximum 40).
  • L7x provides “Double-Data Rate” (DDR) backplane communications.
    • DDR improves performance on the back plane.
    • Redundancy and Motion applications.
  • 1 GB removable secure digital memory card (SDRAM) provides improved data integrity and faster reads and writes than CompactFlash technology, and is rated for SIL 2 applications. It has the same capabilities as the Compact Flash card in the L6x processor namely:
    • Application/Project storage.
    • Firmware Supervisor.
    • Run time tag data read/write.
  • Available in fixed memory sizes:
    • 4 MB (1756-L72),
    • 8 MB (1756-L73),
    • 16 MB (1756-L74) and
    • 32 MB (1756-L75).
  • Energy Storage Module (ESM) eliminates maintenance, transportation and environmental issues associated with lithium batteries.
  • The USB 2.0 port enables faster uploads and downloads (runs at full-speed of 12mb/s), firmware upgrades and online edits. It results in improved performance for flashing firmware, uploads/downloads, on-line edits & bridging to the backplane.
  • On-board 4-character display provides enhanced controller diagnostics run-time and health information.

General Performance improvements as compared to L6x/B:

  • 2x performance improvement for standard and process applications.
  • Faster cross loading for high availability systems (i.e. redundancy).
  • Up to 3x faster per axis update rates.
  • Up to 2.5x faster application program motion command/logic execution.
  • Increase axis support from 32 axis to 100 axis (max 128 drives using an EN3TR/A).
    • L7x is optimized for CIP motion applications.

Features:

  • Communicates over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+, Remote I/O, RS-232 and many third-party process and device networks.
  • Supports multiple controllers in the same chassis, with each one operating independently.

Standard Controllers:

  • Memory options ranging from 2 to 32 MB.
  • Full controller redundancy.
  • Integrated SERCOS and analog motion.
  • Relay Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block and SFC programming.
  • Integrates with 1756 ControlLogix I/O modules.

Extreme Environment Controllers:

  • Same functionality as standard ControlLogix controllers.
  • Designed for environments with -25...70 °C (-13...158 °F) temperature range.
  • Operates in environments with -20...70 °C (-4...158 °F) temperature range when used with FLEX I/O-XT modules.

GuardLogix Controllers:

  • Integrated safety and motion control in the same chassis.
  • TÜV-certified for SIL 2 functional safety.
  • Memory options ranging from 750 KB to 8 MB.
  • Supports redundancy for safety-related functions.
  • Requires a 1756-L6xS controller and 1756-LSP safety partner to achieve SIL 3 certification.
  • Requires no setup for automatically-configured safety partner.
  • Integrates with 1791 DS/ES CompactBlock Guard I/O modules.

The new ControlLogix L7x Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) makes use of the RSLogix 5000 programming software to design and configure your ControlLogix or GuardLogix system.

The controllers and modules you select, along with your network configuration, determine what additional software packages you need to configure and program your system. Additional required software may include RSNetWorx network configuration software and RSLinx communication software.

With RSLogix 5000 programming software, you need only one software package for discrete, process, batch, motion, safety and drive-based applications. RSLogix 5000 software offers an easy-to-use, IEC61131-3 compliant interface, symbolic programming with structures and arrays and a comprehensive instruction set that serves many types of applications. It provides ladder logic, structured text, function block diagram and sequential function chart editors for program development as well as support for the S88 equipment phase state model for batch and machine control applications.
